LONDON MARATHON - SUNDAY 26TH APRIL 09

24 February 2009

Seven fantastic people are running this year to raise funds for DHG. Please support them in any way you can!

Amazingly, five of them are running in memory of the same person, Tom Pow, who sadly died nearly 7 years ago aged 15½. Tom made such an impact in the lives of his family and friends that they have been constant fundraisers for DHG ever since.

Inspiration for five running in memory of Tom Pow

This year, Tom's memory will be spurring on younger brother Jack P, stepdad Bob, Uncle Paul, Aunty Leigh and friend Jack W. What a wonderful tribute to a marvellous young man who is sadly missed.

Leigh, our only lady runner this year says "I am a 36 year old police officer with Kent police. I decided last year that I would write a list of things I wanted to do before I was 40 - not too far to go now!

One of them was to run the London Marathon. My friends feel that less energetic things would have been better! However, I stuck to my guns and wanted a charity to run for that meant something to me.

In 1991 I met my then to be husband Laurie Freeman and his family. This included his nephews Tom, and twins Jack and Jamie Pow, who were 5 and 4 at that time. "The boys" as they were affectionately known bowled into the room and straight into my heart. The fun, laughter and tears that Tom, Jack and Jamie brought to my life was something I will never forget.

I run this marathon in memory of Tom, for his brothers Jack and Jamie, his cousin Charlie and my children Joe and Georgia who have become the people they are from knowing and loving Tom.

Everyone should have a Tom Pow in their life."

Hi, my name is Jason Curtis and I am delighted to be running (or jogging!!) for the second time for DHG in this year’s London Marathon.

I am 39 years old, married with a 16 year old daughter, and live in Bridgend, South Wales. I learned about the DHG charity through a friend 2 years ago, and admire the tireless work done by the team (and of course the donors) to create a better life for those with Down's syndrome. I have met some of the team, and it was an easy decision to try to maximise donations once again for the group.

Last year was my first marathon and, at the time, I thought it would certainly be my last. I managed to complete the course in 4 hours 55 minutes, but boy was it hard at times – particularly from the 17 mile point in. My target this year is 4 hours 30 mins, though having just suffered a heavy cold, the training is well behind schedule!

Anyway, it’s a good cause, and a lot of hard training work will go into this, so generous donations gratefully received!

This will be my first ever marathon but as age is catching up with me I thought it’s now or never!!

I knew Tom from the age of 3 years and he is my inspiration for this run. The Down's Heart Group supported Lorraine, myself and Jack and Jamie so well after Tom’s death, and indeed during his life, that it is important to me to give something back.

We hold an annual Golf Day in Tom’s memory each year and always give the funds to DHG but this is my way of doing something more personal.

I have previously run a half marathon and as a keen athlete wanted to complete the London Marathon, but wanted to do it for a good cause.

I am friends with Jack Pow and decided I would like to run in his brother’s memory. I hope to raise a good amount to help children and their families in need of the DHG’s help so please feel free to give generously and help support a deserving charity.

A veteran runner for DHG, Paul always says never again, but we don't believe him!

He comments “Never again is almost here!! One more time for Tom and my Dad, God rest them both. Best of luck to all the 1st time runners running for DHG.”

See Paul pictured above with nephew Jack.

My 1 year old niece Sophie had surgery last year to address heart defects associated with her Down's. I’m pleased to say she has since gone from strength to strength and we’re enormously grateful for the start in life she has received as a result and so welcome the opportunity to support your good work in this way.
